Like many of you, my ancestors sailed past the Statue of Liberty on their way to New York City and Ellis Island, the gateway of immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lady Liberty's shining torch and enigmatic smile greeted millions as they arrived...

...but if you were a babe born in Jersey City like I was,

...you got a much different view!
