In mid-July 2002, I
tried my hand at shooting some night train photos in an industrial
area in Troy Ohio adjacent to a grade crossing and passing
track. Some of the photos were taken without flash using ASA
800 film and others were taken with flash. Considering
this was only my second or third attempt--and the first decent
pictures resulting from those attempts--I think they came out
pretty well!

In the photo above, we are looking
north at the various target signals which govern the trains'
movements on the CSX Railroad. Yes, the target signals are the
ones appearing as vertical clusters. The red light in the
center is the rear marker of a train which went by before I got out
of the car, unpacked the camera and lined up the shot!

Looking a little to the northeast
across the passing tracks, we see some typical Midwestern industrial
buildings in the quiet night.

A few minutes later, the night turns
loud and busy as crossing lights and bells come on, traffic stops,
and a fast freight roars north on its way to Toledo.

And as the target
signals turn to red, protecting the train that just sped past, the
quiet of the night returns to the crossing.
