After the graduation parade, all the visitors were invited to tour their graduate's basic training dormitory to get an idea what sort of environment they had lived in for the previous six and a half weeks.  Joey asked his Dad, Joe, and I to visit Flight 152's dormitory at the 324th Training Squadron.

For me, the walk up the stairs to the dormitory was a bit of deja vu from when I went through basic in April-May 1976.  While it was at a different squadron, the dormitory looked nearly the same.  For most folk, the visit would be an eye-opener:

  • The locker -- all the hangers spaced perfectly, the dufflebag folded and put away on the left side, the hat and flashlight on the right!

  • The bed -- perfectly folded, no wrinkles!  (But Uncle Pat could always get those hospital corners tighter on the blanket, Joey!)

  • The security locker drawer -- Everything of value put away including money and mail and other important items.  Dad is definitely impressed!

  • The underwear drawer -- Joe is just in total shock at the neatly folded underwear--I'm surprised he didn't check Joey's ID to see if it was really his kid!

I think Joe spoke for every parent who toured the dormitory that day:

"God Bless America and God Bless Basic Training!"
